Sylvan Research Papers

Sylvan's educational philosophy is based on reliable research, up-to-date best practices, and common sense. Mastery learning is the fundamental principle for all tutoring programs; students do not move from one level to the next until they have mastered the skills and concepts on which they are currently working. Research shows mastery learning is especially helpful for subjects that are sequential in nature, such as reading and math.

Additional research-based practices that Sylvan employs include continuous assessment, extensive reading, interactive learning, strategic reading and writing, early intervention, number sense, and the use of concrete materials ("manipulatives"). Throughout a Sylvan student's tutoring program, parents are involved through regularly scheduled parent conferences. Students' teachers are also regularly consulted so that the Sylvan curriculum can work in conjunction with classroom material. The combined efforts of the parents and teachers will help a student achieve success.
